Visual Thinking
We commonly use the following words in everyday expression: foresight, hindsight, oversight, and insight. Each is based on the word “sight” although we are referring to sight figuratively rather than physically. These four words reveal the mind’s ability to think in four distinct directions, perhaps simultaneously. Foresight suggests looking forward to the future; hindsight suggests looking backward to the past; oversight suggests a broad and comprehensive view of a given situation; and insight suggests looking deep within. While we use these four words in common language, we also have the potential to intensify their use for specific purposes. For example, in planning we may use hindsight to gather information about past experience. We use oversight to gain a better perspective on how to manage or gain an advantage. We use foresight to set the direction for the future; and we use insight to interpret what we have observed.
